THE VINYL WORD - AIR FUSION 2006

Well how can I sum up Air Fusion? Well after a very hard year getting the license, trying to raise funds, trying to persuade objectors and applying for 2 venues - Friday night kicked off without a hitch and was superb! The evening’s entertainment started with DJ Joe Freeze providing his usual mix of cool summer house music and vinyl scratchin’ expertise followed by Ben McGowan delivering a set of electro and house which had the crowds rockin!! Next up was Audible Porno accompanied by MC CarpetFace and DJ Samo. Audible Porno served up a truly show stopping performance of beatboxing, rap and r’n’b licks which wowed the crowd, its hard to explain in words what this man is capable of doing with his voice, it had to be heard to be believed!!. By now the sun was setting and the crowd was building in time for me, Mr Vinyl to hit the decks to a backdrop of lights, lasers and fluorescent clad dancers. Besides the fact that I was using a DJX700 which was a bit tricky to use and seemed to disappear when fading tracks it all went well and Dreadzone set up around me and started jamming along to some of my house tracks, one in particular that I had made earlier in the morning ‘DJ Dan vs Switch’ the Mr Vinyl mix, watch this space!! Anyway Dreadzone followed and absolutely cleaned up, they were amazing and over 3,000 punters jumped and went crazy to their dubby beats!!! An amazing show and well worth bringing them down to Devon! We will see them again very very soon!

So Friday kicked the festival off in a very good way, teeing up the rock day to follow. Starting off with ‘The Savage Jazz’ from Exeter, the lads performed well and set up stage for young band ‘Livin in a Valve State’ this band excelled in last years battle of bands performance, jumping on speakers, getting in the crowd mingling and playing some crazy solo guitar using wireless receivers, they went off well re-creating some classics like Paradise City, American Idiot and some covers by the Foo Fighters. ‘The Crackers’ followed doing their jazzy rock and roll thing setting up the crowd nicely for Glasgow based ‘The Casuals’ this band is huge they look the part and are fantastic musicians, definitely worthy of checking out (myspace), whilst all this was going on Palm FM were gee’ing up the crowd and doing live broadcasts and links betweens bands, big thanks to Palm FM! Definitely a station to check out in the future! At 5pm it was time for local band ‘Morph’ who did an amazing rendition of the Kaiser Chiefs ‘Everyday I Love You Less and Less’ ‘The Exiles’ from Glastonbury followed and besides the fact they left half their drum kit behind they were an amazing original band, its definitely worth hitting myspace for more info on them, after that the very relaxed and kind (lent Exiles drummer their drum kit!) ‘Funky Munks’ did an outstanding set of Red Hot Chilli Peppers classics. Dennis Smith’s (ex muse manager) band ‘Nixon and the Burn’ were up next and did a heavy rock set suited and booted in tuxes. The Morris Brother Band where our headline band for the Saturday and have a huge fan bass around here, oh yes they did it, Jas Morris, guitarist of the year proved exactly why he won that title!!!! Whilst all this was going on I had slipped over into one of the tents and set up the CDJ’s for a mad hour and a half house set for the punters that were missing the dance tent, a great night had by all, and thousands danced the night away till 11:30pm….then it was off to Claires for me to carry on the night of madness, I was playing with Joe Freeze and we partied till the early hours!!!!

Sunday was due to start at 12 with the Newton Abbot Town and District Band, I was seriously lacking sleep by this time so after a red bull breakfast I helped set up the media van and radio team and off we go again for the last day of Air Fusion, the Newton Abbot Town Band were very good and very competent musicians, 25 of them in total and sounding very good across the park. The public where starting to creep in now for the days performances, on the main stage next were the all girl band ‘4 **** Lovers’ who are great and well worth checking out (myspace) 4 girls playing instruments and singing good pop music, hats off to them! After that was ‘Diverted Traffic’, a band that are influenced by Floyd and Coldplay that sound good, play original tracks and added the piano into their set brilliantly, a great sound! After Diverted Traffic up next was the ‘Loose Cannons’, 11 piece jazz/funk band playing great feel good funky tracks and some very crowd pleasing moments!!!... 4 o’clock I had booked ‘The Toretz’ to warm up for ska legends ‘Too Hot’, ‘The Toretz’ had recently recruited my mate Dave on guitar, Dave is aka Battleplan, techno legend multi talented guitarist so it was good to see him perform and he is now part of a very tight unit that could go very far, great tunes with hilarious lyrics. Last up were ‘TOO HOT’ the ultimate ska band doing it all over the South West and if you haven’t seen them, now’s your chance! they are playing everywhere this summer, so get out and check them out. Bouncing ska that even had the park residents jumping!!!!!!!

While all this was going on Stagecoach Theatre Arts Contemporary Stage was running dance, singing and drama workshops for all ages, and some great performances from bellydancers, 12 yr old singer Coral Butcher, Hannah Finn (Stairway to the Stars 2005 champ), Rosemary Woodwark School of Dance and an amazing performance of Gnarls Barkley’s ‘Crazy’ and various other contemporary songs by future star - Rozie!!! The contemporary stage compare was the one and only Cristal Vinyl!! Also Special thanks to Frog and Rosbeef  Theatre Company for performing French madness around the park.

If you were one of the 9500 people who came this year and you enjoyed it, please write to the leisure and tourism dept @ Teignbridge District Council (info@teignbridge.gov.uk) and express your feelings as this really makes a difference and keeps the festival scene alive in Devon.

Big thanks to all the festival crew for all their hard work and dedication without which the event would never be possible.
For your information the festival costs £23,000 to run, a year to organise and is run totally voluntary by a core group of people that run under the charity known as Platform 4 Performance. A very special thanks goes out to the organisations and businesses that support Air Fusion………. And lastly not forgetting to give God the nod for the great weather, thanx mate!!!

Next up for me in August is my residency at Claires Nightclub in Torquay and watch this space for an exclusive set on Palm FM and just to update you on something I mentioned in these pages a few months back, yes I got the FM license for Radio Coombeshead which starts in September yeehaa!, and if your from around the Newton Abbot area you can catch me at Hush/Enigma at the end of the month and a very sneaky free party if your at the right place at the right time!!!!

2 new remixes due soon so keep checking my website or myspace for updates, take it easy and see you back here very soon……..
